    The Star's first ever team manager, John Hagart, left the club early in the season to join the coaching staff at Tynecastle. Bill Murray took charge. Despite this change there would be an inevitable expectation that the team should go one step further in the Scottish Junior Cup than they had managed the season before.

    A 6-0 victory over Peebles Rovers in the second round with goals from McMichael (2), Goldwire and an Anderson hat-trick demonstrated the Star's intent. A 2-0 win over Largs Thistle was then recorded in the subsequent round. A fourth round draw away to Glasgow side Baillieston was a tough encounter, but the Star secured a draw before winning 3-2 in the replay with goals from Beveridge, Stoddart and an own goal. There was a home victory over Renfrew in the last sixteen with an Anderson double securing a 2-0 win. The quarter-final draw threw up another home tie against Clackmannanshire side Sauchie, a team that were enjoying their best every run in the Scottish Junior Cup. The Star would win the match 4-2 with goals from Prentice (2), Forrester and Beveridge. The team that day was: Hogg, Liddle, Printy, Sproull, Forrester, Knox, Anderson, Salton, Beveridge, McPake, Prentice. Sub: Johnston. Incredibly, like the season before the Star were drawn in the semi-final against another local side, this time in the shape of Bonnyrigg Rose. The match took place once again at Easter Road before a crowd of 8188, but it was Bonnyrigg Rose that were to triumph with a single goal and take their place in the final. However, like the Star the season before, Cambuslang Rangers were to prove too strong and retained the cup after a replay.

    If it were not for the Scottish Junior Cup run, the 1971/72 season would have been seen as something of a disaster. A lowly league position and a second round exit in all the other cup competitions would not have been seen as an acceptable set of results, but the Scottish Junior Cup had proved to be the main focus of the season.
