The History of Newtongrange Star
1890 to 1899
1890/91
Football in the Newtongrange area was represented by a number of clubs:
  • Newtongrange Rangers (played only 3 matches in 1889 before folding)
  • Newtongrange Athletic (formed 1890 - folded 1896)
  • Newtongrange Jumpers (played only 1 match in 1890 before folding - lost 3-2 to Craigesk Thistle)
  • Craigesk Thistle (a team formed in 1885 representing Robert Craig's paper mill at Lothianbridge, which closed in the early 1890's, taking the team with it)
  • There was also a team by the name of Lothian Star, which was the same name as a temperance society based in Newtongrange since 1872. This may or may not have had some bearing on the Star's name.
Newtongrange Star started life as a first class juvenile side (under 27's) and their first recorded match was on the 20th of September 1890 and resulted in a 7-1 win over Westfield Rovers.
