NEWTONGRANGE STAR
1966/67

STORY OF THE SEASON

After three years of mid-table mediocrity hopes were high that Star might show some improvement for 1966/7. Sadly it was to be another season bedevilled by inconsistency and although Star’s third place finish was their best for a number of years, they were seven points behind champions Bonnyrigg Rose. Our neighbours lost the overall championship play-off against Linlithgow Rose. The Mid/East Division increased in size to 12 teams with the return of Easthouses under the name EM United, and the first appearance in the Juniors of Peebles Rovers.

The Prestonfield side also accounted for Star in the Scottish Junior Cup, winning 4-2 in West Lothian. Star had to play most of the match with ten men – Rennie had been taken to hospital with a nasty facial injury early on.

However, in the local Cup competitions Star showed much better form and they reached three Finals – only to lose them all. In the East of Scotland Cup Star took three games to get through against Arniston (6-1, after two 3-3 draws), but then cruised past Musselburgh and Armadale to reach the Final. The Semi Final went to a Replay against Armadale, played at Victoria Park, and the visitors had three players sent off as they lost the plot completely. Dalkeith were the opposition in the Final in a match played at Tynecastle – Star lost 2-0.

In the St Michael Cup Star’s run took them through against Pumpherston, Broxburn and Dalkeith. The Final, against Musselburgh, was held at Easter Road. Star were pre-match favourites but lost 5-3.

In the RL Rae Cup Star had wins over Tranent, Broxburn and Dunbar. Dalkeith were once again the opposition for the Final, winning 3-2, at Easter Road. Duncan scored both Star goals.

A couple of players turned senior at the end of the season. Outside Right George Duncan was capable of tormenting the best of defences on a good day and he made the move to Stenhousemuir. Iain Anderson, who had been re-instated to Hearts At the start of the campaign, was transferred to Morton. Also featuring in the side was Tom Britton, a player signed from Berwick but previously with UFC California.
