1961/2 had lacked consistency although Star
showed they could match the best with two Cup wins. In 1962/3
they achieved that level of consistency they were looking for
and won the Mid / East League title. The season was badly disrupted
by the dreadful winter conditions with games continuing into
Star’s opponents in the overall title decider were Sauchie
who had only recently stepped up from Juvenile football. Star
won 4-2 at Victoria Park, but lost 2-0 in the second leg. A
play-off was held at Broxburn, with Sauchie winning 1-0.
The only Cup Final reached by Star was the St Michael Cup. Because
of the bad winter and the late finish to the season no senior
grounds were available, so the Final against Armadale was held
at Saughton Enclosure. The West Lothian side won 2-0 in front
of around 1000 spectators.
Star started their Scottish Junior Cup campaign off well with
an 8-0 thumping of Dundee Osborne at Victoria Park, with Jimmy
Veitch scoring a hat trick. The fans thought the hard work had
been done with a 1-1 draw against Craigmark in Ayrshire, but
the visitors won the replay at Victoria Park 1-0.
Star had a reasonable run in the East of Scotland Cup, beating
Armadale, Broxburn and Preston before losing in the Semi Final.
At the end of the season Jimmy Veitch was transferred to Dumbarton
and youngster Rab Aitchison was signed by Hearts.
